Ali Abdullah Saleh was a Yemeni politician who served as the President of Yemen for more than two decades, from 1990 until 2012. He was born in a small village in southern Yemen and began his career as a military officer. Saleh played a crucial role in the unification of North and South Yemen in 1990, which led to his ascension to the presidency.

After leaving the presidency, Saleh remained active in Yemeni politics, aligning himself with the Houthi rebels who took control of the capital city of Sana'a. However, his alliance with the Houthis eventually fell apart, and he was killed in December 2017 following a falling-out with the group.
Saleh's legacy is a matter of debate among Yemenis, with some seeing him as a strong leader who brought stability to the country, while others view him as a corrupt and authoritarian ruler who failed to address Yemen's underlying problems.
