Muath al-Kasasbeh was a Jordanian military pilot who was kidnapped and executed by ISIS in early 2015. Al-Kasasbeh was a member of the coalition troops that launched out airstrikes on ISIS sites in Syria and Iraq. His plane was shot down in December 2014, and he was captured by ISIS. The group later posted a video of al-Kasasbeh being burned alive in a cage, eliciting worldwide anger and condemnation. The assassination was widely regarded as a watershed moment in the war against ISIS, prompting greater efforts by foreign forces to combat the organisation. In Jordan, where he was revered as a national hero, al-death Kasasbeh's was also mourned.
Muath al-Kasasbeh was born in the Jordanian city of Karak in 1988. He was the youngest of eight siblings and the son of a retired Jordanian Air Force general. Al-Kasasbeh served as a first lieutenant in the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army and as a pilot in the Royal Jordanian Air Force. In 2010, he graduated from King Hussein Air College and was assigned to fly the F-16 combat plane.
The detention and subsequent murder of Al-Kasasbeh by ISIS drew international attention to the Middle East conflict. The brutality of his execution was internationally denounced, and many countries, including Jordan, swore to increase their efforts to combat ISIS.
In Jordan, Kasasbeh's death was seen as a rallying point for national unity, with thousands of mourners attending his funeral, including King Abdullah II. Following his assassination, Jordan killed two ISIS-linked inmates and strengthened its support in coalition forces against the group.
Muath al-Kasasbeh legacy as a hero and symbol of resistance to extremism is cherished and honored in Jordan and throughout the world.
